This was a project that began with nothing, just an empty urban site with no function. This made the project very interesting, I decided to take everything- the program, the materialty, the concept from the site itself.

My concept was simple, I wanted to literally lift the grass up to become a roof, such that it would become a private space away from the cars. The structure would also collect water, some of which would be used to irrigate the grass, while the rest could be used by locals to water plants and wash cars etc. The idea was to create a ‘watering hole’ space beneath the roof where people would meet in an otherwise unsociable urban landscape. This would result in an experiential contrast between the hard, functional space beneath the roof, and the ethereal, private space above.
